FortressFortress is a programming language developed for high-performance computing ( HPC ) that can also serve as a general-purpose programming language. Sun Microsystems created Fortress, inspired in part by FORTRAN , which IBM created in the 1950s for use by mathematicians, engineers and scientists. The syntax in Fortress is well suited for mathematical notation, a characteristic it shares with FORTRAN. The language is designed to run on machines with large amounts of addressable random access memory ( RAM ) such as supercomputer s and systems in academic and research institutions. Fortress may become popular as personal computer s evolve with more RAM and more powerful microprocessor s to allow smooth running of Vista . Fortress is ideal for solving sets of simultaneous equations in many variables and for other complex mathematical operations. The language, while expandable, is built around a compact core.
